A passion for color and fluid movement drives my work and is nurtured by the natural environment of The Gulf of Mexico. Following a long career as an exhibiting artist, educator and curator, I moved from Washington DC to the Sarasota area in 2020. Originally from Colorado, I am still inspired by The Southwest as well.
During social distancing I found myself immersed in both nature and the novels of author Haruki Murakami . While the natural world has always been my primary source of imagery, the new work has taken a bit of a magical realist turn informed both by reading and by the unusual cultural moment we are experiencing.
The new paintings are biomorphic and segue between the conscious and the unconscious. They represent a search for higher awareness and reference the connectivity of all things. To me these paintings contain a healing aspect which I hope the viewer will experience as well.
Carol Lukitsch received an MFA from The University of Maryland, College Park where she studied with Sam Gilliam, and a BFA Summa Cum Laude from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville.
She was awarded a Fulbright Grant and was a Senior Lecturer in Turkey for two years. Ms. Lukitsch taught drawing, painting and design at several colleges and universities and served as Curator/Director of Exhibitions at Arlington Arts Center (now Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington) in Northern Virginia.
Ms. Lukitsch received numerous fellowships and was painter in residence at The Millay Colony for the Arts in Austerlitz, New York; The Virginia Center for Creative Arts at Sweetbriar, Virginia and The Hilai Colony for the Arts in Ma’alot, Israel.
She has exhibited extensively both internationally and in the United States. Her work is in numerous private and public collections including The Museum of Contemporary Art, Montecatini, Italy; The State Museum of Painting and Sculpture, Ankara, Turkey; The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington DC and The United States Embassy in Panama.
